Breastfeeding Education

Breastfeeding is natural, but it doesn’t always come naturally. Whether you're preparing for your first feeding or navigating challenges along the way, our expert lactation consultants can offer evidence-based education and gentle encouragement.

Breast milk provides the ideal nutrition for infants, fully meeting their dietary needs for about the first six months of life. After this period, solid foods are typically introduced, complementing breast milk to further support your baby’s growing nutritional needs. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends continued breastfeeding until at least 2 years of age or longer, as mutually desired by mom and baby.

In addition to its nutritional benefits, breast milk also offers significant health benefits, particularly for premature infants. It is rich in essential antibodies and enzymes that help protect against infections and support the baby’s development, giving them the best possible start in life.

At CLS, we recognize the uniqueness of every breastfeeding journey. Our certified lactation consultants support you with compassion and expert breastfeeding guidance. With personalized care, practical strategies, and a welcoming, judgment-free space, we help you feel empowered and informed.

Why Breastfeeding Education Matters

You deserve expert support that’s as personal and caring as the bond you’re building with your baby. Breastfeeding education is a vital part of this support, helping to lay a strong foundation for your feeding journey.

By providing evidence-based knowledge, we empower you to make confident, informed decisions, reducing feelings of uncertainty and anxiety.

Here’s why you should consider breastfeeding education.

  • Maximize Breastfeeding Success: Understanding how milk production works, how to achieve a comfortable latch, and what normal newborn feeding behaviors look like helps maximize breastfeeding success. Evidence-based education supports a comfortable, satisfying, and sustainable feeding journey for both you and your baby.
  • Prevent Common Challenges: Many early breastfeeding difficulties, such as sore nipples, engorgement, or concerns about milk supply, can often be prevented or minimized with proper education. We help you recognize signs early and take proactive steps to stay comfortable and on track.
  • Personalized Guidance: Our consultants offer personalized advice based on your personal goals, medical history, lifestyle, and unique circumstances, ensuring you have a plan that truly fits you and your baby.
  • Boost Confidence: Preparation makes all the difference. Through personalized education, we equip you with the tools you need to feel confident in your feeding choices and parenting instincts.
  • Prepare for Real-Life Situations: Breastfeeding education equips you with practical strategies for real-world scenarios, such as returning to work, combining breastfeeding and pumping, and navigating baby’s growth spurts. With the right guidance, you’ll feel empowered to make informed decisions that fit changes in your daily life and your baby’s development.
  • Ongoing Support: Our support does not end after your initial breastfeeding education. From your prenatal planning sessions to the early days of feeding, and through each transition, our lactation consultants remain a steady presence, offering practical tools and emotional reassurance.

What We Offer Within Breastfeeding Education

We recognize that breastfeeding isn’t just about feeding your baby; it’s about creating a nurturing experience that strengthens the bond between you and your child. That’s why early, effective breastfeeding education is crucial for every mother.

Our expert lactation consultants offer comprehensive, evidence-based guidance from pregnancy through postpartum and beyond. We combine emotional support with practical knowledge to help you feel confident, informed, and prepared at every stage of your breastfeeding journey.

Prenatal Preparation

In the first few days after birth, your breasts produce colostrum, also known as your baby's first milk. This golden-yellow fluid is rich in nutrients and antibodies that help protect your baby against infections. While the quantity of colostrum is small, it provides everything your baby needs in the first few days when fed frequently.

Breastfeeding works on a natural demand-and-supply system: the more your baby nurses (or you pump), the more milk your body will produce. Frequent and effective feedings in the first few days, about 8 to 12 times in 24 hours, help establish a healthy milk supply.

Understanding your milk supply and what to expect in the first hours and days after the baby comes is essential to set yourself up for success.

During your prenatal appointments, our lactation consultants will help you:

  • Understand how milk supply develops in the early stages and how you can support it.
  • Prepare for your baby’s first feed and what to expect during the early postpartum hours.
  • Set realistic, flexible feeding goals that can be adjusted as your baby grows and their needs change.

Breastfeeding Basics

Breastfeeding often takes time to feel comfortable, even for experienced moms with a second or third child. Whether it's your first baby or not, it’s completely normal to feel unfamiliar or awkward since factors like latch, milk supply, and positioning can vary from baby to baby.

Most mothers need at least two to three weeks to adjust to breastfeeding, and even then, challenges may arise as your baby grows and their feeding patterns change.

Keeping a few foundational principles in mind and knowing when to seek support can make a big difference in your experience and success with breastfeeding.

Here’s how our lactation consultants can help.

  • Positioning & Latching: A proper latch and comfortable positioning are essential for pain-free feeding and effective milk transfer. We’ll guide you through various techniques to find what works best for you and your baby. A good latch covers much of the areola and prevents nipple pain, irritation, or compression, allowing for smoother feeding and better milk flow. We’ll also help you explore different positions so you can find what feels most natural and effective.
  • Feeding Cues & Rhythms: Babies thrive when fed on cue, that is, whenever they show signs of hunger, rather than on a strict schedule. Responsive feeding ensures your baby gets enough milk and encourages a healthy milk supply for you. We’ll help you recognize early hunger cues and understand your baby’s natural feeding rhythms, aiming for 8–12 feedings in a 24-hour period.
  • Addressing Common Challenges: Whether it's nipple pain, engorgement, or concerns about your milk supply, we can address any issues that may arise with gentle, evidence-based solutions.

Pumping & Milk Expression

Direct breastfeeding isn’t always possible or practical for every mother. In these situations, you can still provide your baby with the gift of your breastmilk.

Milk expression can be done using a breast pump or by hand. Since milk production follows a supply-and-demand system, regular pumping helps maintain your milk supply when you're away from your baby.

It’s normal not to express much milk the first few times you pump. However, with time and consistency, your body will respond to the stimulation, and milk production should gradually increase. Our lactation consultants offer expert guidance on:

  • When & How to Begin: It’s important to understand when to start expressing milk, especially if you’re planning to go back to work or need to supplement breastfeeding. Our lactation consultants will help you establish a pumping routine that aligns with your lifestyle and your baby’s needs.
  • Choosing & Using a Breast Pump: With so many options available in the stores, selecting the right breast pump for you can feel overwhelming. We’ll guide you through choosing the right pump based on your needs, whether that’s a manual pump, an electric pump, or a hospital-grade pump. We’ll also teach you how to use your pump effectively to ensure you’re getting the most out of each session.
  • Creating a Pumping Routine: We help you build a routine that suits both your work schedule and your personal time, making the process as efficient as possible.
  • Milk Storage & Safety: Proper storage is crucial to maintaining the quality of your milk. We provide tips on how to safely store your breast milk, ensuring that your baby always has access to this nourishing gift.

Weaning & Transitioning to Solids

Weaning is the gradual process of moving your baby from breastfeeding to other sources of nourishment. It’s a unique journey for every family, requiring patience, flexibility, and understanding from both you and your child.

Weaning often begins naturally around six months, when solid foods, especially those rich in iron and protein, are introduced. By around one year, some babies start to breastfeed less as they enjoy a wider variety of solids and learn to drink from a cup.

Others may wean themselves later in toddlerhood as they become more active and less inclined to sit still to nurse.

The decision of when to wean is deeply personal. It may be influenced by your return to work, health considerations, or simply a sense that the time feels right. Gradually reducing nursing sessions can make the transition more comfortable for both you and your baby. For example, consider dropping one feeding session a week until your child takes all the feeds from a bottle or cup.

We offer gentle and effective strategies to help you navigate this transition with care. During our consultations, we will guide you through:

  • Gentle Strategies for Transitioning: We understand that weaning can be an emotional process for both you and your baby. Our lactation consultants will help you implement a gradual weaning plan that respects your child’s needs and your emotional well-being.
  • Emotional & Physical Considerations: Weaning can bring about mixed feelings for both mother and baby. Our consultants provide support to ensure that the transition is emotionally and physically comfortable, helping to maintain the bond you’ve created through breastfeeding.
  • Personalized Advice on Potential Issues: Weaning can cause several issues, including breast engorgement, plugged ducts, or breast infection. Our lactation consultants provide personalized guidance as you prepare to wean or if you experience any of these issues during this transition..

Special Circumstances

We understand that every breastfeeding journey is unique, and sometimes special circumstances require additional support. Our lactation consultants provide inclusive guidance for:

  • NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) Families: If your baby is born premature or has to spend time in the NICU, we offer tailored support to help you establish breastfeeding once you’re both home together.
  • Multiple Babies: Expecting twins or multiple babies is a very exciting time.  It can also be overwhelming to think about providing enough milk for multiple babies. We provide guidance to help you manage feeding routines and ensure each baby gets the nourishment they need.
  • Low Milk Supply or Oversupply: Whether you're facing concerns about producing enough milk or managing an oversupply, our lactation consultants offer solutions that are sensitive to your needs and goals.

At CLS, we recommend earlier if you anticipate a high-risk birth, twins, or other special circumstances.

We also encourage significant others and support people to attend, so they can learn how to best assist you during breastfeeding.
