Pumping Education

Whether you plan to use a breast pump occasionally or rely on it as the primary feeding method, pumping education can be an integral part of the breastfeeding journey. Learning how, when, and why to pump can make all the difference in protecting your milk supply and ensuring your baby receives the gift of your milk.

New mothers choose to pump for many reasons, such as returning to work, sharing feeding responsibilities, navigating NICU stays, addressing latching difficulties, or simply seeking more flexibility. No matter your situation or goals, understanding how to use a breast pump effectively and confidently can be important in ensuring your baby receives your milk and you attain your feeding goals.

At CLS, we provide pumping education rooted in personalized, expert support. Our certified lactation consultants offer medically sound education tailored to your specific situation, goals, and lifestyle. From selecting the right breast pump to creating a routine that supports your supply, we empower you with knowledge and ongoing support.

When to Begin Pumping

If you are new to pumping, you might wonder when you should start. The truth is there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. The ideal time to start pumping depends entirely on your individual circumstances and goals.

If your baby is healthy, feeding well at the breast, and there’s no expected need for separation, it’s often recommended to wait until around four to six weeks postpartum before introducing a pump. This allows time for you and your baby to establish a strong breastfeeding rhythm.

In the meantime, hand expression can be a helpful tool to relieve fullness or collect small amounts of milk.

However, early pumping within the first 6 hours postpartum may be recommended in the following situations.

  • NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) Admission: If your baby is born prematurely or has medical needs requiring NICU care, you may not be able to breastfeed them directly. In this case, pumping early can help initiate and maintain your milk supply.
  • Latching or Feeding Difficulties: If your baby struggles to latch or drink milk effectively, pumping can ensure your milk supply continues while feeding challenges are addressed.
  • Low Milk Supply or Breastfeeding Complications: If you're experiencing low milk production, engorgement, or other breastfeeding challenges, early pumping can help stimulate your supply and maintain your milk flow.

At CLS, we understand that the decision of when to begin pumping is deeply personal and can vary depending on your health, your baby’s needs, and your overall feeding goals. Our lactation consultants offer compassionate, individualized guidance to help you determine when pumping may fit into your breastfeeding journey.

During your personalized sessions, we’ll assess your situation and provide clear, evidence-based guidance tailored to you. We also help you develop a pumping routine that works for your lifestyle and preferences, whether that means occasional pumping, exclusive pumping, or building a freezer supply.

Choosing the Right Pump

Picking a suitable breast pump depends on how often you expect to be pumping, where you are in your lactation journey, your personal circumstances, your baby’s needs, and your attitude to breastfeeding and expressing.

With so many options on the market, it’s natural to feel unsure about where to start. Our consultants take the time to understand your unique needs, preferences, and goals before offering personalized recommendations.

There are two primary types of pumps to consider:

  • Personal-Use Pumps: These are designed for individual use and include manual, single electric, and double electric options. They’re typically lightweight, portable, and affordable, making them ideal for occasional to regular use at home, work, or on the go.
  • Hospital-Grade Pumps: These are multi-user pumps designed for higher performance. It is often used when establishing milk supply in the early postpartum period or for exclusive pumping. They’re especially helpful for NICU families or mothers facing medical challenges with lactation.

We help you compare features, weigh your options, and select a pump that aligns with your lifestyle and insurance coverage. We offer a wide variety of top-quality breast pumps from trusted brands that are carefully chosen to meet different needs and preferences. Whether you’re looking for a hospital-grade option, something lightweight for on-the-go use, or a pump with advanced features, we can help you find the perfect fit.

Creating a Pumping Routine

A consistent routine helps signal your body to continue producing milk. When milk is removed from the breasts, this signals your body to make more milk. Your routine will depend on the circumstances for your pumping.

If you’re at home and looking to build a freezer stash or increase your supply, try pumping about 30 minutes after your baby’s morning nursing session. This timing can help you collect extra milk while still prioritizing your baby’s needs.

If you're pumping because you’re separated from your baby, such as during work hours or a temporary absence, we recommend that you mimic your baby’s usual feeding schedule. Pumping around the same times they would typically nurse, usually every 2–3 hours, helps maintain your supply and keeps your body in sync with their needs.

In any case, your pumping routine should fit into your life. Whether you're exclusively pumping, supplementing nursing sessions, or preparing to return to work, we will help you create a routine that:

  • Supports your milk supply
  • Suits your schedule
  • Feels manageable day to day
  • Adapts as your baby’s needs evolve

At CLS, we help you find a rhythm that works for your unique situation, ensuring your pumping schedule is both realistic and effective. If you're aiming to maintain or increase your supply, we’ll also guide you through techniques for maximizing output and help you understand the signs that your supply is meeting your baby’s needs.

For those combining breastfeeding and pumping, we provide strategies to help you meet your goals. We’ll explore

  • How to time sessions
  • When to pump after nursing
  • How to store milk safely
